Jan 07, 2010 · Although escape and radiate coevolution is thought to be an important process contributing to species diversity, phylogenetic evidence supporting these predictions is surprisingly scant (Futuyma and Agrawal 2009). There are, however, a few studies that provide clues about the validity of the escape and radiate model.
A central but little-tested prediction of "escape and radiation" coevolution is that colonization of novel, chemically defended host plant clades accelerates insect herbivore diversification. That theory, in turn, exemplifies one side of a broader debate about the relative influence on clade dynamics of intrinsic (biotic) vs. extrinsic (physical-environmental) forces.
